Effective behaviour management is about more than achieving compliance. It is an opportunity to teach responsibility, develop character and strengthen relationships.
This session explores how school staff can move from control and punishment towards a more relational and restorative approach to behaviour. Participants will consider how behaviour communicates underlying needs, how to maintain clear boundaries while preserving dignity, and how to respond to conflict in ways that promote accountability, reflection and repair.
Through practical examples and restorative conversation strategies, the session provides tools to help staff navigate challenging behaviour, rebuild trust and support young people to develop greater personal responsibility.
Key ideas that will be covered include:
-
Recognise behaviour as communication and consider the factors underlying challenging behaviour.
-
Apply restorative approaches that promote reflection, empathy, responsibility and repair.
-
Balance clear boundaries and consistent expectations with warmth, support and connection.
-
Hold students accountable without shame, humiliation or damaging their sense of dignity.
-
Rebuild trust and relationships following conflict or behavioural incidents.
-
Use practical restorative questions and conversations to support character development and lasting behavioural change.
