This session explores the foundations of effective pastoral care in schools and why strong systems matter just as much as good intentions. Participants will examine how a culture of relational responsibility is created through everyday practices, clear roles, and reliable structures. The workshop unpacks the differences between pastoral care, counselling, and discipline, and shows how schools can design sustainable systems that support students without relying on individual “heroics.” Practical reflections and planning activities help staff identify small, achievable actions that strengthen belonging, clarity, and care across the school community.
Key ideas that will be covered include:
- Understand pastoral care as a whole-school culture and system, not just a program or individual role
- Recognise how micro-moments of care (noticing, greeting, follow-up) build belonging and trust over time
- Distinguish clearly between pastoral care, counselling, and discipline, and understand the boundaries of each
- Use simple language and processes (such as the “handover sentence”) to support students while referring appropriately
- Understand tiered care systems (universal, targeted, and intensive support) within a school context
- Identify practical ways to strengthen structures, roles, and consistency so care does not rely on individual effort alone
