Opinion – Olympians are only amazing because of the people behind them
It is that wonderful time every 4 years when we celebrate the athleticism, adaptability and come-from-behind stories that the Olympics typically represents. During this time, we hold up and celebrate the achievement of the individual or the team they belong to. And rightly so – you don’t accidentally become some of the best athletes in the world.
One of the things that struck me while watching a whole heap of events though was the entourage sitting behind the athlete. Their coach, trainer, manager, physiotherapist, doctor, dietitian, sports psychologist, dietitian, and assumedly at some point (for most), their parents or caregivers. These are the people who turn up to every session, provide the structure, resources, training, care and support that ensures that an athlete has the best chance to do their best. And at no point do they get up on the podium to enjoy the wild applause. Nope. They are in the background, cheering on their athlete and enjoying THEIR success because that is what you do.
And how like parenting that is.
Here you are, behind the scenes, providing structure, resources, training, and support to ensure that your child has the best chance to do their best. For every training session life throws their way, you are there directly or indirectly. Your voice helps remind them of what to do so they can explore the world, your warm hugs recharge them when they need to recharge. And as they grow, you grow too. But always trying to keep a few steps ahead of them so you can pour a little from your cup and into theirs to make sure it is as full as we can make it.
We’ll never have the parent Olympics (though could you imagine the amazing events you could host with that!). So for the moment that you read this, imagine your little or big person, positively impact on the lives of others and enjoy that this is your little champion you helped train.
